Horsemanship Program

Our Horsemanship Program offers adaptive riding to those with disabilities and unique challenges. We have found that riding a horse can bring significant improvement in a shorter amount of time for many participants compared to unmounted activities only.

For those with physical limitations, riding a horse provides many health benefits. When riding, the natural movement of the horse rhythmically moves the rider’s body in a manner similar to a human gait, which brings about all the physical benefits of exercise. Results have shown improvement in flexibility, balance, muscle strength, circulation, and breathing just as if the individual were able to walk on their own.

On an emotional level, it is easy for the participants to create a connection with the horse because horses give immediate feedback to the rider based on the rider’s actions. Horses also have the ability to mirror the feelings of the one working with them, which helps the participant understand their own feelings more clearly and gain perspective.

Many types of animals are used for such purposes, but the special relationship formed with a horse can help an individual gain trust and confidence in a way that most animals cannot. A horse’s large and intimidating appearance forces an individual to listen, follow instruction and trust those around them. For some participants, it is actually being up on the horse that naturally breaks down the barriers that keep them from receiving help. This naturally occurring vulnerability of the rider is replaced with trust as the horse begins to respond to them. Learning to trust is a turning point for many participants as they move from fighting to survive to being able to thrive.

Adaptive riding has also been known to build self-sufficiency, communication, social skills, impulse control and boundaries. The sense of accomplishment that comes from being able to communicate with a horse also builds a confidence that makes other goals in their lives seem more attainable.

The benefits of an adaptive riding program have far-reaching effects on the lives of those that cannot participate in many other activities due to their disability or unique challenges. The skills learned can be utilized throughout the rest of their lives.
